Be Still and Know Spiritual Direction

Be still and know…

…that I am God.

Psalm 46:10 (ellipsis mine)

The peace that comes from this truth is everything. And stillness is so worth the effort. With the centuries old practice of spiritual direction, I can help you create space for that stillness.

One hour together…the core elements of silence, prayer, and discussion…and we’re on our way. As a trained spiritual director, the only thing I ‘direct’ are questions to help you recognize God’s fingerprints in your life. I don’t have a special knowledge of what God is saying to you. I don’t ‘hold you accountable’ or try to solve your problems or give advice. Think of me as a spiritual companion who will pray for you and with you and a safe place to discuss things that matter. I think you’ll find it’s pretty amazing…

And your first session is free…so why not give it a try…

What is Spiritual Direction?

Christian Spiritual direction is “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.” (William A. Barry and William J. Connolly, The Practice of Spiritual Direction)

Why Spiritual Direction?

  • To slow down and collect your thoughts. Life is hectic and slowing down can help you identify what you really want and where God is leading you.
  • To help you make important decisions. The silence and discussion help clarify your desires and needs.
  • To process grief, disappointment and anger towards God. Life is hard and it’s easty to get stuck in the hurt. Spiritual direction provides an opportunity to process those feelings.
  • Many people come to spiritual direction in mid-life when their life hasn’t turned out as they had hoped. It’s a safe space to process those feelings and the opportunity to be real with God about your disappointment can bring healing.
  • To be intentional about growing in your relationship with God.

**Important Note: Spiritual direction is not therapy/counseling; though it does resemble counseling. But the similarities should stop there…if the spiritual director is doing it right. ;) Counseling is problem and/or (human) relationship focused and a good therapist provides advice and tools centered around those issues. Spiritual direction is focused on your relationship with God. And a good spiritual director limits their advice to suggested spiritual practices (only if you want them) and strives to simply ask questions that help you build trust in your relationship with God. In my opinion, a Follower of Christ can benefit tremendously from counseling AND spiritual direction and I recommend both for an emotionally healthy foundation for life.

35 year old Mom of 4 in Cincinnati

“Spiritual direction has been an integral tool in my knowing Christ over the past year. The guided time of solitude and silence paired with processing out loud has helped me to know Jesus in a personal way and discover the Jesus of the Bible who is kind, patient, loving, and bears so gently with me. My time with Jesus in spiritual direction has been a time of discovery and friendship with God in a tangible way. And I am no one special. The God that has befriended me in spiritual direction is ready and excited to spend this time with you too. If you are somewhat interested in spiritual direction I cannot think of a better use of time and money. It has single handedly shifted the way I see Jesus in the most beautiful way. Also Beth is a very, very good spiritual director. She is the only one I’ve ever had but I can’t imagine someone guiding the time in a better way. God has given her a gift.”

“I sought healing through counseling for many years, and it does not compare to the healing that I have experienced through my time in spiritual direction.  Spiritual direction is significant because it creates a space to quiet oneself and experience God.  The spiritual director guides the foundation of this space to provide needed freedom without pressure or control. I will always remember these experiences, which are uniquely specific to me.”

“Spiritual Direction – It is a wonderful space that is “created” to seek God as a trinity.  It is different from individual prayer and meditation, where you are consciously leading that connection. It’s different from therapy or counseling where you “process” with a therapist or counselor.  In the space you create with your Spiritual Director, there is a stillness.  In that stillness, you let go of the need to lead or control that. It enables you to be more “open” to receive God, without distraction or interference. “

About Me: Beth

Jesus follower, aunt to 11 , amateur genealogist, small group leader, enneagram 5w4, accountant, spiritual director. I love the local Church, a good story, traveling, podcasts, good TV, history, England, Ireland, Wisconsin, cool breezes, walking, snow, conversations that matter & baking.

I was trained in Spiritual Direction by the School of Sustainable Faith https://sustainablefaith.com and graduated from their 2 year program. This Christ centered program included 10 modules that covered a variety of topics including: Story and Conversation, Self Awareness and The Enneagram, Stages of Faith, Discernment Processes, Ignatian Spirituality, Group Spiritual Direction and the importance of ongoing Supervision, among other topics. I was also required to receive spiritual direction from my own spiritual director, as well as ‘practice’ with my own directees throughout the program. I value and abide by the Guidelines of Ethical Conduct as outlined by Spiritual Directors International. Not all spiritual directors receive official training and they may come from any faith, non-faith, spiritual, or religious background. Anyone seeking spiritual direction should do their research to find a spiritual director that best aligns with their needs and beliefs.
